Mitsubishi recalls 1,420 Mirage units in PHL

Mitsubishi Motors Philippines Corp. (MMPC) will recall its newly-launched Mirage GLS models after issues on its frontbreaking system were discovered in Japan.

“The purpose of the recall is to replace the front wheel speed sensors,” Mitsubishi said in a statement Friday, adding the replacement is free of charge.

“These sensors were found to have insufficient waterproofing if penetrated by water from rain and/or during carwash may cause the antilock brake system (ABS) not to function correctly,” the firm said.

Around 1,420 Mirage GLS units were sold from November 2012 to March this year.

Mitsubishi noted that although there has been no reported accident as a consequence of the problem, “MMPC was directed by its principal Mitsubishi Motors Corp., Japan to voluntarily conduct this safety recall as its proactive commitment quality and consumer safety.”

MMPC has already mobilized its customer relations department to contact customers with affected models.

The Mirage, launched on November 16 last year, is one of the growth drivers of Mitsubishi for 2012 and for 2013. Some 700 to 800 units are imported from Thailand every month, higher than the firm's target of 500 per month set in November 2012.
