Visayas grid on red alert as reserves fall below zero
Possible brownouts threaten parts of the Visayas on Friday as the National Grid Corp. of the Philippines indicated the Visayas grid's power reserves for the day fell below zero.
As of 6 a.m., the NGCP said the Visayas grid had a reserve power deficit of 20 megawatts, as its system capacity of 1,158 MW fell short of the projected peak demand of 1,578 MW.
Mindanao also has a projected power reserve deficit of 37 megawatts, as its system capacity of 1,288 MW fell short of projected peak demand of 1,325 MW.
However, the NGCP did not immediately specify the reason for the reserve deficit in the Visayas.
The NGCP defines a red alert as a system condition when the contingency reserve is zero or a generation deficiency exists.
On the other hand, the Luzon grid has a projected reserve of 795 MW, as its system capacity of 9,109 MW is greater than the projected peak demand of 8,314 MW.
Quezon brownouts
Meanwhile, the NGCP said some parts of Quezon province may experience a power interruption from 6 a.m. to noon.
This is due to an emergency shutdown at Quezon Electric Cooperative 1 "to facilitate installation of three phase recloser" at the Gumaca substation.
