PHL factory output up 12.8% in April on fuels, printing, tobacco production

Philippine manufacturing output grew in double-digit terms as a result of higher production of petroleum products, printing, and tobacco, the Philippine Statistics Authority (PSA) reported Tuesday.

PSA data showed manufacturing, as measured by the volume of production index or VoPI, expanded by 12.8 percent in April.

The latest figure compares with a 1.1-percent contraction in March and a 9 percent expansion a year earlier.

"Petroleum products led the sectors that contributed to the performance of VoPI," the PSA noted in a statement.

There was a strong rebound in petroleum products, which was higher by 127.8 percent.

"Other major sectors that pulled-up the VoPI were the following: printing, machinery except electrical, tobacco products, fabricated metal products, beverages and furniture and fixtures," it said. – Danessa O. Rivera/VS, GMA News
