AFTER DRIVER’S SLAY

Grab asks riders to be ready with ID, input exact trip details

Grab Philippines has announced that it would impose additional security measures to protect its drivers following the killing of Gerardo "Junjie" Maquidato Jr.

Grab sought support from its passengers in order to prevent the incident from happening again and asked them to take the following measures:

  • Prepare your ID. Before starting the trip, our driver-partners may ask you to show a personal identification card (ID) to verify your identity specially during night shift hours. We assure you that all information shown to our driver-partners will be kept confidential and will only be used for verification purposes.
  • Input the correct pick-up and drop-off points. Make sure you check and set the correct pick-up and drop-off points before you book a ride. Our driver-partners will only bring you to the indicated booking destinations. We are currently discussing tech solutions that would decrease, if not completely hamper, the chances of carnapping incidents involving Transport Network Vehicle Services (TNVS).

Maquidato was killed on Bonanza Street in Pasay City on Thursday. Initial police report indicated that a gunshot was heard around 7:50 p.m. before the victim was seen being pushed out of a silver Toyota Innova.

The driver was hailed as a "good Samaritan" after he gave a dialysis patient a ride without charging any fare. He was also a driver-awardee of Grab.

Grab said that it was "working closely with the Philippine National Police-Highway Patrol Group to ensure that justice will be served and perpetrators will be put behind bars."

Suspects remain at-large.

Grab earlier vowed that a P100,000 reward would be given to anyone who could provide information that could lead to the arrest of the suspects.  —NB, GMA News
