BSP Governor Espenilla extends medical leave to October 26

Bangko Sentral ng Pilipinas (BSP) Governor Nestor Espenilla, Jr. on Wednesday announced the extension of his medical leave, as the central bank chief focuses on his health.

Through an advisory of the central bank Corporate Affairs Office (CORAO), Espenilla said he will extend his medical leave until Friday next week, October 26.

"BSP Governor Nestor A. Espenilla, Jr. is extending his medical leave until 26 October 2018. Thereafter, he may be taking intermittent medical leaves," the advisory read.

Espenilla in September announced a two-week break from September 19 to October 2 to undergo treatment, but has since extended.

The central bank governor in February revealed he was recovering from early-stage tongue cancer, which was diagnosed in November 2017.

In March, Espenilla said he finished radiation treatment for cancer, saying he was confident that his health will normalize soon.

In an update sent to reporters on Wednesday, Espenilla said his treatment was "so far so good."

"In the meantime, the BSP team stays steadfast in pursuing the Continuity++ Agenda while Governor Espenilla is completing his treatment," the BSP said.

During his medical leave, Deputy Governors Diwa Guinigundo, Chuchi Fonacier, and Maria Almasara Cyd Tuaño-Amador will take turns as officer-in-charge. —KG, GMA News
