Commuter group wants minimum jeepney fare back to P8

The United Filipino Consumers and Commuters (UFCC) on Tuesday submitted a petition with the Land Transportation Franchising and Regulatory Board (LTFRB) seeking to bring back the minimum jeepney fare to P8.00.

According to UFCC president Rodolfo B. Javellana Jr., he formally submitted the petition to the LTFRB on Tuesday morning.

"Nag-file na po ako dito sa LTFRB ng rollback sa pasahe," Javellana said in a text message.

To recall, the LTFRB last month denied the motion filed by UFCC to stop the earlier approved hike in jeepney fares to P10 from P8.

In their appeal to stop the hike, the UFCC noted that jeepney drivers are already making good plying their trade with their income above the daily minimum wage.

Effective November 2, the LTFRB decision made permanent the provisional fare increase of P1 granted on July 6, 2018, and an additional P1 for the first four kilometers or a total increase of P2.00.

The Department of Transportation, however, last month called on the LTFRB to review the hike. — Jon Viktor D. Cabuenas/RSJ, GMA News
