Korea vows to take back trash illegally shipped to PHL

The government of South Korea has vowed to take back the garbage that had been exported to the Philippines earlier this year, Super Radyo dzBB reported on Thursday.

According to a statement from the Embassy of South Korea, the Korean government was taking measures to have the waste brought back to the country "as soon as possible."

It also said the Korean Ministry of Environment, Korea Customs Service, and the Korean Ministry of Foreign Affairs have initiated an investigation on the concerned South Korean importer.

Moreover, the Korean government vowed to prevent another similar incident from happening in the future.

The announcement came a week after the Bureau of Customs (BOC) intercepted 1,200 tons of trash inside 51 containers that arrived  October 21 at the Mindanao International Container Terminal Port from South Korea.

The "misdeclared" shipment was consigned to Verde Soco Philippines, which was also the consignee for garbage from South Korea that arrived via ship in Tagoloan, Misamis Oriental last July 21. —NB, GMA News
