Telco saw 1.5M scam texts sent in 2 weeks — privacy chief

The National Privacy Commission is looking into the role of syndicates which could have used legally collected data to blast spam messages via text, Commissioner Raymund Liboro has said.

In an episode of The Mangahas Interviews, Liboro said a telco told the NPC that it sent 1.5 million text messages from these sources.

"Tinitingnan natin na ang maaring posibilidad na nagamit ng mga sindikato ito, para gamitin ang mga data aggregators na ito again ano para makapagplace po sa mga telco ng kanilang campaign," Liboro told veteran journalist Malou Mangahas.

"At yan nga po yung mga natanggap natin. 'Yung isa nga pong telco sinasabi nila na 1.5 million text ang nailabas nila in two weeks dito nga po sa mga sources na ito," he added.

Mobile subscribers over the past week reported receiving spam messages offering jobs and containing suspicious website links that could result in unsuspecting users losing cash digitally. -NB, BAP, GMA News
