NGCP issues yellow alert for Visayas grid for Monday, May 18, 2026

The power grid of Visayas will be placed under yellow alert on Monday afternoon due to forced outages and derated capacity of several plants, the National Grid Corporation of the Philippines said.

In an advisory, NGCP said the Visayas grid will be under yellow alert from 4 p.m. to 8 p.m. It is running at an available capacity of 2,676 megawatts (MW) against a peak demand of 2,513 MW.

The grid operator said 13 plants are on forced outage since May 2026, one plant since March 2026, three plants since 2025, two plants since 2024, two plants since 2023, and one plant since 2021, while 11 plants are running on derated capacities, for a total of 852.9 MW unavailable to the grid.

NGCP said the factors that contributed to the yellow alert declaration are the unavailability of Visayas' large coal plants TVI 1, TVI 2, and PEDC 3, and the high forecasted system demand.

A yellow alert is declared when the reserve power in the grid becomes low. While supply is still enough to meet current demand, it no longer reaches the required safety margin.—AOL, GMA News
