GSIS offers P15.1B in emergency loans for earthquake-affected members, pensioners

The Government Service Insurance System (GSIS) has allocated P15.1 billion in emergency assistance for some 608,343 members and pensioners affected by the magnitude 7.8 earthquake that struck Mindanao earlier this week.

The GSIS said qualified members and pensioners who do not have any outstanding loans can apply for a P20,000 loan at a 6% interest rate and a three-year payment term.

Proceeds will be created directly to the borrower’s ATM card.

Those with current emergency loans can borrow up to P40,000 to settle previous loan balances, bringing the maximum net amount of P20,000.

Among those qualified for the program are active members and old-age and disability pensioners residing or working in areas officially declared under a state of calamity.

Applications may be filed through the GSIS Touch mobile application and will be accepted until September 7, 2026.

“Our thoughts are with our fellow Filipinos in Mindanao affected by this powerful earthquake,” GSIS president and general manager Jose Arnulfo “Wick” Veloso said in an emailed statement.

“The GSIS is ready to provide accessible financial relief to help our members, pensioners, and partner government agencies recover and rebuild,” he added.

The Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (PHIVOLCS) recorded the earthquake at 7:37 a.m. on Monday, June 8, initially with a magnitude 7 and a depth of 10 kilometers (km). This was upgraded to magnitude 7.8 with a depth of 33 km.

Intensity VII was reported in General Santos City, with an instrumental intensity VIII recorded in Malapatan, Sarangani.

PHIVOLCS has also raised a tsunami warning, as coastal communities in affected areas may experience waves more than one meter above normal tide levels.

The National Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Council (NDRRMC) has reported 45 deaths as of 6 p.m. on Tuesday, June 9. — JMA, GMA News
