Mindanao power situation back to normal within this week —DOE
The power situation in Mindanao is expected to return to normal within this week following the magnitude 7.8 earthquake that jolted southern Mindanao last Monday, Energy Secretary Sharon Garin said Wednesday.
Data from the Department of Energy (DOE) showed that as of June 10, 2026 there are 71,525 consumers without power, down 45.18% from 130,463 when the earthquake struck.
Moreover, there are only two power plants that are still offline from four that shut down during the catastrophe.
At the sidelines of a forum hosted by the Management Association of the Philippines (MAP) in Taguig City, Garin said that stakeholders are slowly bringing back power to avoid overwhelming the grid.
“So it is slowly… and we're trying to be as fast as we can, but we have to be very careful because if you bring it too fast, the interruptions could be more long term. So, we're asking for patience… within the week it will be normalized,” the Energy chief said.
The National Grid Corporation of the Philippines (NGCP) hoisted a yellow alert in the Mindanao grid from 12 p.m. to 3 p.m.
“Hopefully, within the week, we'll get everything fixed and the yellow alerts in Mindanao will be over,” Garin said. —VAL, GMA News
