NGCP: Visayas grid under yellow alert on Wednesday, July 8, 2026

The Visayas grid will be placed under yellow alert for five hours on Wednesday afternoon to evening due to the outage of several plants powering the islands-cluster.

In an advisory, the National Grid Corporation of the Philippines (NGCP) said the yellow alert is hoisted over the grid from 4 p.m. to 9 p.m.

This came after the available capacity was recorded at 2,641 megawatts (MW) against a peak demand of 2,510 MW.

The grid operator said eight plants are on forced outage in July 2026, four plants since June, seven plants since May, one plant since March, three plants since 2025, three plants since 2024, two plants since 2023, and one plant since 2021, while 14 plants are running on derated capacities, for a total of 879.7MW unavailable to the grid.

NGCP cited the following factors that contributed to the yellow alert declaration:

  • Unavailability of Visayas' large coal plants TVI 1 & 2
  • PCPC declared derated at 70MW due to possible boiler tube leak
  • Unavailability of PDPP1 Unit 3, PDPP3 Unit C and E, CPPC Unit 1 and 7, BDPP Unit 3

A yellow alert is issued when the operating margin is insufficient to meet the transmission grid’s contingency requirement.

While supply is still enough to meet current demand, it no longer reaches the required safety margin.

At this level, the possibility of rotational power interruptions increases.—AOL, GMA News
