Grab says drivers, passengers are insured
Transport network company (TNC) Grab on Friday said its partners and drivers and passengers are covered by insurance even if some of the transport network vehicle service (TNVS) units lack the necessary permits.
"We recognize the fact that only those with provisional authority and certificate of public convenience have passenger accident management and insurance (PAMI) coverage, as required by the government," Grab said in a statement.
The company said it took upon itself to get a private insurer and cover all TNVS partners and passengers.
The insurer is the Great American Insurance, which Grab engaged last April.
"This is a first-of-its-kind insurance policy in the industry to be provided by a ride-hailing platform, and is the largest in terms of coverage in Southeast Asia," Grab said.
The app-based ride-hailing service said the insurance policy covers "event of accidental death, permanent dismemberment and bodily injuries in the event of accidents for drivers and passengers."
"For death or permanent disability, TNVS drivers and partners can claim up to $4,100 or P200,000; while up to $410 or P20,000 can be claimed for medical reimbursements," it said.
Grab, however, clarified that in some instances claims could be voided, such as death, disability, injury, illness or any medical condition that happened as a consequence of any criminal act, assault as a result of provocation, as well as intoxication, use of drugs, violation or attempts to violate the law, and resistance to lawful arrest. — Marlly Rome Bondoc/VDS, GMA News
