AFTER MOTORISTS' COMPLAINTS

Cars on Skyway back to 'pay as you enter' on Tuesday night

Skyway management will temporarily suspend its new toll collection system and revert to the "pay as you enter" scheme for private vehicles coming from Alabang, Sucat and Bicutan on Tuesday at 10 p.m. following numerous complaints by motorists over the new scheme.

In a statement released Tuesday evening, Skyway O&M Corporation (SOMCO) said Class 1 or private vehicles coming from Alabang, Sucat and Bicutan taking the Skyway will revert to the old scheme. Only Class 2 vehicles such as buses and delivery vans will be required to utilize the Runway Toll Plaza for cash payments.

SOMCO apologized to the public for the inconvenience and asked them for understanding.

"As always, we continue to adjust to our motorists' needs, and that includes exploring better ways to impement this transition to a new toll collection system in the future," the Skyway management said.

"We still believe the new system can benefit a greater number of people over the long term," he added.

The tollway corporation had released new instructions after motorists complained of heavy traffic due to the new toll collection system which vehicles to stop twice: Once for the payment booth and another for the booth where motorists have to surrender a slip containing a QR code.

But motorists complained of heavy traffic because of the new scheme, with Muntinlupa Rep. Ruffy Biazon expressing a desire to probe the issue.

"This is the side effect of the new toll collection procedure on the Skyway which has caused heavy traffic from the runway toll plaza to past Bicutan near Sucat on the Northbound lane...tempers flare, aggression is heightened, road rage occurs and accidents happen," he said in a Facebook post. —JST, GMA News
