BSP urges public to check banknotes carefully during 'ber' months

A sari-sari store in Dagupan City received a fake P1,000 bill from a customer who used it to pay for a purchase.

The incident happened on September 26 in Barangay Bonuan Binloc, according to a report by GMA Regional TV’s Sendee Salvacio on Saksi on Wednesday.

One of the store attendants, Andrea Cera, said the bill was folded, so they did not immediately inspect it.

The store attendants only noticed later that evening that the P1,000 bill was counterfeit.

The fake banknote appeared to have been printed on coupon bond paper.

“It had the word ‘fake’ written on it,” Cera said.

The store owner reported the incident to the Barangay Bonuan Binloc council. Since then, the store attendants have been more vigilant in checking bills before accepting payments to prevent a similar incident.

The Bangko Sentral ng Pilipinas (BSP) has reminded the public to carefully examine banknotes, particularly during the “ber” months when cash transactions typically increase.

The BSP advises the public to use the Feel, Look and Tilt method to check whether a Philippine banknote is genuine.
