How much are your mobile apps costing you?

How much are your mobile apps costing you?

There’s no denying the many advantages of mobile applications.

From online shopping and banking to whiling the time away with games, streaming, music, and e-books, phone applications are here to stay.

If you leave someone with his or her smartphone, there’s no doubt he or she can spend a whole day using the gadget and playing with various apps: a photo-editing app here, a movie-streaming app there and there’s no idle time.

With the many benefits of apps, there are some disadvantages. Aside from loss of personal communication with friends and family, there’s the hidden cost of paid apps or in-app purchases. A P130 monthly subscription doesn’t add up much; a P 100 one-time payment game is even better

However – and you probably heard this before – little things add up.

So, how much are your apps really costing you?

Below is an estimate of how much monthly subscriptions and in-app purchases cost. Individually, the costs are negligible, but add them up and you might be spending more than you realized.

Save money

Even if P1,260 a month doesn’t seem so much, the amount doesn’t take into account other subscriptions. Instead of renting a movie, you are buying. Instead of sticking to playing one game a month, you are playing two, three, or more.

The monthly – P1,260 – could actually pay for your phone, electricity, or water bills. Or if you have those covered, you could put the P1,260 or at least half of it into a savings account, and you could save P7,560 a year or P15,120 if you save the whole amount.

Does this mean you have to cancel all your subscriptions and stop in-app purchases?

Not really. It’s a different story if you’re taking out debt and personal loans to cover your expenses, because you’ve finished your salary. In that situation, you must cancel your subscriptions and stop your app purchases to get back on your feet.

However, if you have some wiggle room at the end of each month it’s not the end of the world.

Little things do add up: P1,260 a month or part of it can be put to good use. If you can limit the number of subscriptions and save some on your expenses, it’s a win-win situation for you. Enjoy mobile apps and save money at the same time.
