#PINNED: Part-time jobs and other side hustles you can do this quarantine
#Pinned makes it easier for young Filipinos to discover meaningful and enriching content and stories that will help them separate music from the noise, wheat from the chaff, and flowers from the weeds.
All our stories are written by young creatives who made it their life mission to know everything there is to know about how fellow young adults can make the most out of their limited down time every day, every week.
The current quarantine measures have limited the work force’s office hours, which means that some employers are allowing more flexible working arrangements for their employees. This is a godsend for employees that are looking to earn extra money in this uncertain time.
Now, there are a lot of side hustles and opportunities available that can be taken by anyone who’s driven to earn alongside their 8 AM to 5 PM day job. Luckily, most of these part-time jobs only require data and a smartphone. Listed below are different kinds of work that can be taken on the sidelines:
1. English teacher

Home-based and part-time English teachers are seeing an increase in demand locally and among other Asian countries. A lot of people prioritize honing the use of the most widely-spoken world language that is English to be able to communicate better to a wider reach and leverage on endless opportunities all over the world. With great demand comes high pay with this one.
Both Acadsoc and 51Talk are open to part-timers who could teach English to Chinese learners. Teaching English online can also be easily done in the comforts of your own homes. Other than those two sites, those who are looking for English teaching gigs can be International English Language Testing System (IELTS) tutors for Filipinos who are in need of a review for their IELTS exam.
2. Financial Advisor
It has been well-known across the Philippines that even being a part-time Financial Advisor is a well-paying job—all it takes is prospecting, setting appointments, building rapport with your prospective clients, and analyzing the needs of that client. Does that client need a life or health insurance, or savings or retirement program? They also do solution presentations and annual reviews, from which the latter helps in prolonging your career as a Financial Advisor if you eventually want to pursue it full-time.
3. Transcription
Now that we're stuck at home, transcribing as a side gig is already emerging to be one of the most in-demand nowadays. Even people who don’t have a college degree are qualified for the job. More or less, you get paid to type. Once you are contacted for transcription, they send you a file that is either in audio or video format. You will then transcribe everything you hear into text files before submission.
4. Writing
To be fair, writing might look like an easy job. And it probably is. Our boy Hemingway have this to say about writing: "There is nothing to writing. All you do is sit down at a typewriter and bleed." Easy, huh.
Anyway, if you have the writing chops, you can get plenty of content commissions ranging from simple blogposts to complex technical papers that require actual research. Pay ranges wildly, though. The influx of low-cost writers online has severely affected the average pay per word or per article. Still, if you know your worth and can back your asking price with actual experience, then this can be a lucrative side gig.
5. Social Media Management

If you're social media savvy, then this can be a brilliant side gig. All you have to do is manage the pages of businesses online. This can also include writing captions or producing content, from photos to images. The scope of the work varies and depends on the negotiated price. Mostly this just involves page management and moderation so you get to delete those pesky spam comments with their badly translated Filipino messages.
6. Search Engine Optimization (SEO)
Familiar with how the search engines (read: GOOGLE) tick? Then this side hustle is for you! This usually involves optimizing the website of a business to make it more visible on search results or for it to appear more on said search results. You can learn on the job, probably, but you have to understand the basics of SEO first before attempting to apply for this.
7. Graphic Design
With a background experience in graphic design or illustrating, taking this in-demand side hustle during the quarantine within the confines of your own home with foreign clients is a game-changer. Not only is this art-based but in relation to marketing as well since you will also be contributing to the planning of promotional and impactful advertisements by considering the target market and current trends, with their logos, photos, illustrations, and the like as it requires various techniques in digital design that are marketable.
These side hustles can also turn out to be full-time sidelines if you can to land a long-term project with a client. However, keep in mind that stability is the most important job feature right now, considering the present circumstances.
