Racing champ Enzo Pastor shot dead in QC

(Updated 11:20 a.m.) The Philippines lost a sporting icon in racing champ Ferdinand "Enzo" Pastor after he was shot by motorcycle-riding men in Quezon City Thursday night.

Pastor was the first Filipino to participate in the NASCAR Whelen Euroseries Open Championship race circuit.

Investigators are still gathering leads on the assailants and determining the motive for the shooting of Pastor, radio dzBB's Roland Bola and James Agustin reported.

Pastor was driving a truck and had stopped at the corner of Visayas Avenue and Congressional Extension Avenue when a gunman approached and shot him, the dzBB reports said

Wounded in Thursday night's attack was one Paulo Salazar, who was in the truck (WSC-331), a separate dzBB report said.

A report by GMA News' Oscar Oida on GMA News TV's "News to Go" said Pastor was transporting a race car to Pampanga from Batangas when he stopped at a traffic light at 10 p.m.

Pastor succumbed to gunshot wounds in the head, neck and arms. Police recovered shells from a cal-.45 pistol from the crime scene.

An initial investigation showed the gunman "casually" walked to a motorcycle driven by a companion, then fled.

Targeted?

Also, police said the leads they gathered so far indicated Pastor was the target.

"Nilapitan talaga e, so bumaba yung gunman, talagang lumapit from behind sa kanya, tiningnan kung talagang siya. So na-identify siya talagang binaril siya, on the spot, hitting the head, so talaga siya ang pakay," said Superintendent Ariel Capucao of the Quezon City Police District Station 3.

When asked if robbery could be the motive, he said, "wala, walang pagnanakaw, walang nawalang gamit niya."

Pastor was rushed to the Quezon City General Hospital but was declared dead on arrival. His relatives declined to give a statement to media.

Shih said Pastor's assistant was still in shock.

Sports-related?

The report on "News to Go" said police are not discounting the possibility the killing could be race-related.

Pastor had recently won the Asian V8 Racing Championship, and was about to join a race this July in Clark.
