Driver in deadly Batasan Road accident surrenders to police

The driver of the truck that lost its brakes along Batasan Road in Quezon City surrendered to police and recounted the events that led to the deadly accident, QC Police District Station 6 head Superintendent Rossel Cejas said in an interview on QRT on Thursday.

"Galing daw sila ng pier, yung nakahuli sa driver na sumurrender na rin sa atin, at papunta sila ng San Mateo Road nang mawalan sila ng preno then unfortunately... nabangga niya itong several vehicles at siya ay nawalan na ng balance at kumalas yung mga sakay niyang bakal," Cejas said.

The driver's porter was among the 10 people confirmed by police to have been taken to hospitals after the incident.

Authorities said at least four people were killed.

Cejas advised motorists to seek alternative routes as the southbound side of the accident site is still closed for clean-up.

"As of now, sarado po itong kalsada na 'to papuntang San Mateo Road at kiniclear pa po natin. Madulas po at may mga tumapon po na langis galing sa truck," he said.

The driver may face charges of reckless imprudence resulting in multiple homicide and damage to property as police continue to assess the casualties and injuries in the accident.

According to tweets by Super Radyo dzBB reporter Rowena Salvacion, three vehicles and several pedestrians were run over by the truck when it lost control of its breaks.

Initial reports pegged five casualties in the accident that dispatched victims to St. Mattheus Hospital at Barangay Banaba, JP Rizal and Gen. Marval Hospital. — Rie Takumi/MDM, GMA News
