Estrella-Pantaleon Bridge reopened due to heavy traffic; MMDA not notified

The Estrella-Pantaleon Bridge has been reopened following heavy traffic in the area.

The Makati Public Safety Department (MAPSA) has reopened the bridge since 9 p.m. on Monday, according to a report on Unang Balita on Tuesday.

However, the Metropolitan Manila Development Authority (MMDA) was not notified of the reopening, MMDA spokesperson Celine Pialago said.

The Estrella Bridge, which connects Makati City and Mandaluyong City, was closed over the weekend for rehabilitation.

Pialago said MAPSA has jurisdiction over the bridge.

The MMDA said it is coordinating with the Makati Public Safety Department and the Department of Public Works and Highways (DPWH) regarding its reclosure.

Suspended

It was reported later on Balitanghali on Tuesday that the DPWH had decided to suspend the closure of the bridge.

This was after the usual travel time from Rockwell Center in Makati to Barangay Barangka Drive in Mandaluyong was reportedly lengthened from five minutes to at least half an hour.

Several motorists and commuters caught in the jam at around 7 p.m. Monday night said the traffic was even heavier than usual.

Meanwhile, a traffic enforcer said it normally only takes at least 10 to 15 minutes to make the trip.

"'Yung mga palabas po na estudyante tuwing alas-kuwatro po kami nagta-traffic na ma-heavy, pero hindi naman po nagtatagal," Efren Buna said. —Jamil Santos and Margaret Claire Layug/KG, GMA News
