HEAVY TRAFFIC SEEN

Tandang Sora flyover, intersection closed starting Feb. 23 for MRT7 construction

Motorists passing along Commonwealth Avenue in Quezon City should brace for heavy traffic as the Tandang Sora flyover and intersection will be closed starting February 23, 2019.

The four-lane flyover, thoroughfare for at least 100,000 vehicles a day, is set to be demolished as part of the ongoing construction of the Metro Rail Transit System Line 7 (MRT-7).

According to Susan Enriquez' report for "24 Oras" on Thursday, the Metropolitan Manila Development Authority (MMDA) is finalizing plans to install a permanent elevated U-turn slot at the intersection to ease traffic.

"It's better to put an elevated U-turn on that part,"  MMDA general manager Jojo Garcia said.

"Kung galing ka po ng Tandang Sora, kakanan ka para mag-U-turn. Hindi mo na kailangan mag-break ng nine lanes to go U-turn. Pag elevated U-turn 'yan, nasa right side ka, aakyat ka lang sa ramp," he added.

The construction of the said U-turn slot, however, is seen to last for two years.

The MMDA appealed for public understanding as only the lanes below the flyover from Fairview going to the Quezon Memorial Circle will remain open.

The MMDA plans to put up signs and position up to 200 additional personnel to guide motorists in the area. —Margaret Claire Layug/ LDF, GMA News
