‘ROAD CLEARING OPS’

DILG to issue show cause orders vs. 99 barangays in Manila

The Department of the Interior and Local Government (DILG) on Tuesday said it would issue show cause orders against 99 barangays in the City of Manila for supposedly failing in their road clearing operations.

This was announced by DILG Undersecretary for Barangay Affairs Martin Diño at a press conference.

"Maglalabas ako ngayon ng show cause order para sa 99 na barangay sa Manila. Pero doon sa ibang siyudad, nandito na rin sa office ko ang complaint. Ang sabi ko nga sa inyo, ang hinahanap ng mamamayan ngayon ay 'yung maintenance noong clearing operations na ginawa ng ating mga mayor," Diño said.

The breakdown of the barangays are as follows:

District I - 38 barangays
District III - 16 barangays
District IV - 22 barangays
District V - 12 barangays
District VI - 10 barangays

"May humabol pa kaya ito ay 99 na barangay sa Maynila," he said.

Diño said the concerned barangay officials would be given five days to explain why they had failed in clearing their respective roads from any kinds of obstruction.

"First batch pa lang ito. They will explain kung bakit hindi nila na-maintain 'yung ginawa ni Mayor Isko Moreno, na ginawa ng city engineering, ng kapulisan...," he said.

Diño further warned that these barangay officials may be suspended. He added that they may also face removal from office.

"'Pag mabigat, sila ang nagpapa-illegal parking, sila ang nagko-conduct ng illegal sidewalk vendor, hindi lang suspension kung hindi pagkatanggal sa kanilang puwesto," Diño said.

Asked for comment, the camp of Manila Mayor Isko Moreno said the latter supports the DILG's move to issue show cause orders against the 99 barangays.

"They should explain why they failed to comply with the President's directive," Julius Leonen, the city's chief public information officer, told GMA News Online.

"In fact, it was the Manila City government who provided the data of the compliance of barangays regarding clearing operations," he added. — RSJ/KG, GMA News
