Truckloads of garbage litter Metro Manila cemeteries


A day after All Saints' Day, local authorities in Metro Manila had to deal with truckloads of garbage left by those who visited the tombs of their loved ones in public cemeteries.

North Cemetery

At the Manila North Cemetery, four truckloads of garbage have been collected as of 5 a.m. on Saturday, according to a report by Isa Avendaño-Umali on Dobol B sa News TV aired on GMA News TV.

 

 

Among the items collected were styrofoam food boxes, plastic bottles and snack packs.

Even the area where pets were buried was littered by trash.

 

 

Personnel of the Metropolitan Manila Development Authority and the Department of Public Services of the Manila city government have been going around the cemetery to collect the garbage.

The garbage collected were placed inside sacks or plastic bags.

Members of a non-government organization also went around the cemetery picking up garbage they could recycle.

More than 600,000 visitors went to the Manila North Cemetery as of Friday afternoon, according to cemetery officer-in-charge Roselle Castañeda.

South Cemetery

Meanwhile, at the Manila South Cemetery, personnel of the local government also started collecting trash on Saturday morning, according to a report by Mao dela Cruz on Dobol B sa News TV.

 

 

The observance of All Saints' Day at the cemetery on Friday was peaceful, according to authorities.

Sangandaan

At the Sangandaan Public Cemetery in Caloocan City, the garbage cleanup also began on Saturday morning, according to a report by Allan Gatus on Dobol B sa News TV.

Some residents also went around collecting melted candle wax which they said could be sold at P15 to P20 per kilo.
