34 parents arrested in Manila for kids' violation of quarantine protocols

Manila City authorities have arrested at least 34 parents of minors who have allegedly violated quarantine measures enforced amid the COVID-19 pandemic.

According to the Manila Public Information Center, the parents were nabbed after Mayor Isko Moreno's warning that parents' supposed neglect of their children is a violation of the Anti-Child Endangerment Act.

"Kailangan matuto ang mga magulang na disiplinahin ang kanilang mga anak," Moreno said. "I have to bite the bullet, I have to implement the law to keep the order in Manila."

Moreno said some parents had allowed their children to leave their residences without face masks and even if curfew is already enforced in their areas.

The Manila Police District (MPD) and the Manila Department of Social Welfare said the arrests were made in the following barangays: 50, 51, 52, 53, 55, 56, 61, 221, 228.

The parents will be facing charges for alleged violation of City Ordinance No. 8243 and the Anti-Child Endangerment Act.

On Thursday, some residents of the city were seen ignoring social distancing measures and the proper wearing of face masks in public places amid the health crisis.

Moreno said he already tasked MPD chief Police Brigadier General Rolando Miranda and all precinct commanders “to implement existing laws.” —Anna Felicia Bajo/KBK, GMA News
