Isko honors late Mayor Lim for dedicated service to Manila

Manila mayor Isko Moreno on Sunday honored the late Mayor Alfredo Lim for his contribution to the development of the city.

In a video posted on Facebook, Moreno extended his condolences to the family of Lim and highlighted the fruits of the ex-mayor’s public service.

“Sa loob ng mahabang panahon ng buhay ni Mayor Lim, inalay niya halos lahat ito sa paglilingkod sa bayan,” Moreno said.

Moreno highlighted the service of Lim as a policeman and even as a city police chief in Manila. He added them Lim also served as a director of the National Bureau of Investigation and Secretary for the Department of the Interior and Local Government as well as a senator of the country.

Moreno noted that Lim led the establishment of Sta. Ana Hospital, Gat Andres Bonifacio Memorial Medical Center, and Ospital ng Sampaloc, as well as the Universidad De Manila.

In honor of Lim, Moreno said the lights on the clock tower of the Manila City Hall will be turned off temporarily.

“Ito lamang ay isang tanda ng ating paggalang sa maliit nating kaparaanan habang kinakaharap natin ang pandemyang ito, na ang isang taong naglingkod, mabigyan lamang natin ng kaunting pagpapahalaga,” he said.

Moreno also recollected the moment he visited Lim to seek for advice after winning the mayoral election.

“Noong ako po ay manalong mayor, siya po ay aking pinuntahan agad para humingi po ng mga payo kung paano susugpuin ang kriminalidad sa ating lipunan at paano patinuin ang mga bahagi ng gobyerno sa ating pamahalaang lungsod,” Moreno said.

On Saturday, Alfredo Lim passed away. He was 90 years old.

On Friday night, Moreno confirmed that Lim had been infected with COVID-19.

Lim, a former police official, served as senator from 2004 to 2007. He was Manila mayor for a total of 12 years from 1992 to 1999, and from 2007 to 2013.

He was also former director of the National Bureau of Investigation (1989-1992) and secretary of the Department of the Interior and Local Government (2000 to 2001) during the administration of President Joseph Estrada, who had beaten him in the 1998 presidential elections.

On Saturday, condolences were conveyed to the Lim family by Palace spokesperson Harry Roque, former President Joseph Estrada, and Senator Lito Lapid. —LBG, GMA News
