Trash including used face masks, gloves, PPEs seen scattered on EDSA

Bags of trash containing used face masks, gloves, personal protective equipment (PPE), among others, were seen strewn on EDSA near White Plains Avenue before dawn on Monday.

Around six garbage bags were opened and found along the highway before 5 a.m., according to a report by Mark Makalalad on Super Radyo dzBB.

There were also used diapers, bottles of mineral water, plastic cups, paper and used tissue.

The trash were found on two northbound lanes, including the bike lane, and were still there as of 6 a.m., according to a report by James Agustin on Unang Balita.

Motorists avoided the trash by staying on the two leftmost lanes.

Two street sweepers of the Metropolitan Manila Development Authority (MMDA) swept the trash away, and the road was cleared by 7:15 a.m., Agustin said in a subsequent report on Unang Balita.

Barangay personnel also helped in the cleanup.

According to MMDA EDSA Traffic Management chief Bong Nebrija, their CCTV was not able to catch the moment the trash were scattered on the highway.

Nebrija said they will check a CCTV camera at the People Power Monument to see if this has footage of the incident.

“Hindi namin masabi kung intentional or what pero kung nahulog man ‘yun, dapat they should have noticed that and picked it up again. Hindi nila pinabayaan sa kalsada,” he said in a “24 Oras” report by Mark Salazar.

He also said the MMDA has coordinated with Joint Task Force COVID Shield commander Police Lieutenant General Guillermo Eleazar, who then ordered an investigator and the station commander of Station 8 to inspect the area and investigate the incident.

“Kung ito naman ay aksidente lamang, titingnan natin kung anong ordinansa ang na-violate natin sa pagkakalat sa kahabaan ng EDSA,” Eleazar said.

As of 7:15 a.m., traffic was already flowing smoothly in the area. — with Julia Mari Ornedo/KG/BM, GMA News
