A Taguig City policeman was arrested on Thursday for alleged extortion activities, police said.

Philippine National Police's Highway Patrol Group identified the accused cop as Police Chief Master Sergeant Mendy Gutierrez, a personnel from the Taguig Police Station 1 Vehicular Traffic Investigation Section.

Police said Gutierrez was accused of extorting money from a foreigner who was involved in a car crash.

According to authorities, the foreigner reported that the policeman allegedly wanted him to pay P500,000 for the medical expenses of the victim in the accident.

Also, the complainant alleged that Gutierrez asked him to pay P20,000 for traffic fines due to the road incident.

PNP-HPG chief Police Brigadier General Alexander Tagum vowed there would be no letup in their efforts to remove corrupt policemen in their unit.

"The public expects much of us law enforcers and what Gutierrez did has no excuse. The HPG is grateful for the victim's trust so we could ensure that such a person will be held accountable for his crime," Tagum said. —LBG, GMA News
