Some vendors go on pork holiday again on Monday

Several vendors in Metro Manila went on pork holiday anew on Monday following the government’s imposition of a price ceiling on pork and chicken in the capital region.

According to Bernadette Reyes’ report on “24 Oras,” over 200 pork retailers in Commonwealth Market decided to not sell pork to avoid losses and penalties for violation.

With this, nearby markets such as Litex Market were also affected.

“Doon kami humahango eh kaya wala kaming panindang baboy puro manok lang,” Amelia Makiraptanan, a pork retailer, said.

At Murphy Market in Cubao, more than 50 vendors of pork and chicken did not open their stalls.

“Hindi na kaya ng P270 talagang luging-lugi na,” Murphy Market meat retailer Stevonrey Ocbenia said.

Meanwhile, pork retailers in Paco Market are planning to go on a pork holiday on Thursday.

Prices of pork in Metro Manila wet markets rose to as much as P420 per kilo for liempo, and P400 per kilo for pigue and kasim last month as supply ran low due to the African swine fever.

To address the issue, President Rodrigo Duterte imposed a price ceiling in the capital region for 60 days.

The price ceiling is P300 per kilo for liempo, P270 per kilo for kasim and pigue, and P160 per kilo for dressed chicken.
