Vehicle volume on EDSA nears pre-pandemic record at 98%—MMDA

The volume of vehicles traversing EDSA has reached 98% of the count before the COVID-19 pandemic started, the Metropolitan Manila Development Authority (MMDA) said on Tuesday.

Interviewed on GMA News’ Unang Balita, MMDA traffic chief Bong Nebrija said around 399,000 vehicles were monitored on EDSA recently.

Before the pandemic, around 405,882 vehicles were seen using EDSA, Nebrija said.

“Recently, nagkaroon na tayo ng volume count. We are already at 399,000 dito sa EDSA (Recently, we conducted a volume count. We are already at 399,000 here in EDSA),” he said.

“Pre-pandemic, we were at 405,882—that was December of 2019. So as you could see, we're nearing, we're almost 98% of that volume. Kaunting diperensiya na lang (It's just a small difference),” he added.

Nebrija pointed out that the traffic situation on EDSA has improved because motorists are not experiencing the same level of traffic congestion that they had encountered before the pandemic.

He attributed this to the adjustments made in lanes and routes in the major thoroughfare such as bus ways, reduction of number of routes, and bike lanes. —KG, GMA News
