Ateneo shooting suspect faces murder, frustrated murder complaints, among others —PNP

Complaints for murder, and frustrated murder have been filed on Monday against the suspect in the fatal shooting incident inside the campus of Ateneo de Manila University, the Philippine National Police (PNP) said Tuesday.

Based on an update from PNP spokesperson Police Colonel Jean Fajardo, three counts of murder and frustrated murder have been filed against Dr. Chao-Tiao Yumol before the Quezon City Prosecutor’s Office.

These complaints, referred by the Quezon City Police District (QCPD), are in relation to the Comprehensive Firearms and Ammunition Regulation Act considering the use of firearms in the commission of a crime.

Aside from these, Yumol is also facing complaints for violation of New Anti-Carnapping Act of 2016 and malicious mischief amounting to P80,000, according to the PNP.

On Sunday, former mayor of Lamitan, Basilan Rose Furigay, her aide Victor Capistrano, and university security guard Jeneven Bandiala were killed in the shooting incident in front of the Areté building inside the Ateneo campus in Quezon City.

Ateneo Law School's graduation was scheduled to take place in the area when the shooting happened. Furigay's daughter Hannah, a graduating law student, was wounded and brought to the hospital.

According to the police, Yumol had a personal quarrel with the former Lamitan mayor.

Quezon City Police District director Police Brigadier General Remus Medina said the Furigays had earlier filed 76 cyber libel cases against Yumol, who alleged that the family was involved in illegal drugs.

The family's legal counsel however said there is no truth to the gunman's accusations that Furigay and her family were involved in the illegal drug trade. —KG, GMA News
