NDRRMC: Death toll from floods climbs to 40


The death toll from floods and landslides that hit parts of the country in the last two weeks went up to 40 on Tuesday night, with most of the new fatalities from Eastern Visayas. In its 6 p.m. update, the National Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Council said the seven fatalities drowned in Eastern and Northern Samar. The seven fatalities were identified as:

  • Veneranda Maestre, 42; and Marcos Maestre, 52, of Paypayon in Oras, Eastern Samar;
  • Gleiza Joy Baliese Rivera, 6, of San Roque, Dolores, Eastern Samar;
  • Jerome Cornala, 9, of San Miguel, San Julian, Eastern Samar;
  • Alfredo Alvero, 6, of Locso-on, Borongan, Eastern Samar;
  • Julius Ellorando, 22, of Campesao, Borongan, Eastern Samar; and
  • Mark Paul Agilando, 21, of Cabariwan, Palapag, Northern Samar
The number of injured remained at eight, and those missing remained at seven. At least 235,867 families or 1,230,022 people in 1,267 villages in 137 towns and 10 cities in 23 provinces were affected. Damage to property was estimated at P876,842,068, including:
  • P283,318,497 to agriculture;
  • P593,492,271 to infrastructure; and
  • P31,300 to private property.
