NAIA 3 ceiling collapses; construction worker, Fil-Am passenger hurt

Part of the ceiling of Terminal 3 of the Ninoy Aquino International Airport collapsed Thursday, a report on News To Go said.

The incident happened at the Sweet Ideas Restaurant inside the terminal at past 7 a.m., Dave de Castro, spokesman of the Manila International Airport Authority (MIAA), said in a statement.

One Filipino-American passenger and a construction worker were brought to the NAIA medical clinic after the incident, News TV Live reported.

A portion of the ceiling of Sweet Ideas Restaurant inside NAIA Terminal 3 fell on Jan. 28, 2016.

According to the report, 20-year-old construction worker Jellyboy Marcial was putting duct tape on an air conditioner cable when he slipped and had to cling to the ceiling, which caused debris to fall down near an area where passengers check-in.

Passenger Lorna De Los Angeles, 59, had to get her blood pressure checked after she was almost hit by the falling debris.

Airport personnel apologized to the passenger, who is now under the care of the NAIA medical clinic.

The restaurant was closed after the incident, De Castro said.

"Initial investigation shows that the materials used for the construction of that particular ceiling of the restaurant were weak," De Castro said.

The MIAA management is still investigating the matter as of posting time.

It also said the restaurant will be closed until the investigation is complete and renovations are done.

De Castro said penalties will be imposed on the concessionaire if investigation shows the construction plan was substandard. —With Bianca Rose Dabu/KG, GMA News
