Duterte not afraid of impeachment, risks presidency to deliver promises

President-elect Rodrigo Duterte on Monday said he is not afraid of a possible impeachment over the policies that he will implement to make sure that he will be able to deliver his campaign promises.

"Impeachment? Go ahead! Walang problema sa akin. I will insist what I promise to the people," Duterte said in his last speech as mayor of Davao City during a flag-raising ceremony in Davao City.

Duterte said he won the May 2016 presidential race because he carried the right message.

"Wala ako ni isang congressman, isang governor and yet I won. Why? Tao. Why? Because I was the person carrying the right message--[fight against] corruption in government, [and] criminality," he said in his speech aired over GMA News TV's News To Go.

Among Duterte's campaign promises were to suppress crime and corruption within the first six months of his administration.

"Tutuparin ko 'yan maski sagasaan ko maski na sino and I stake my honor, my life, and the presidency itself, even if I lose it. Pagka sinabi kong huminto kayo, huminto kayo," he added.

Duterte reiterated during his speech that there will be no corruption in his administration.

“It has to stop. I am hell-bent in stopping corruption. Ayaw ko talaga. 'Yan ang tandaan ninyo kasi you’ll never get any help from me kung may kaso kayo,” he said.

He also reiterated his intention to reimpose death penalty not as a deterrence to crime, but as retribution of criminals.

"Ako ang pagkatao ko I believe in retribution. Why? Magbayad ka, kapag may pinatay ka tapos ni-rape mo, dapat magpakamatay ka. Magbayad ka. sabi nila it will not deter...it did not prevent, obstruct, or deter persons, criminals from committing crime. Correct, why? Because it was not implemented," he said.

Duterte will take his oath as the country's 16th President on June 30. —ALG, GMA News
