Veteran broadcaster Joe Taruc passes away

Veteran radio broadcaster Jose "Joe" Taruc passed away on Saturday. He was 71.

Taruc, who spent decades on the air and was poised as a legend to journalists and broadcasters in the country, was the vice president of Manila-based radio station DZRH.

He was the father of journalist Jay Taruc, the host of GMA Networks' documentary programs "I-Witness" and "Motorcycle Diaries."

"Our father, Jose M. Malgapo, Jr. or, Joe Taruc to many of us, has gone to join his Creator, early morning of September 30, 2017. He died in his sleep," Taruc said in a statement.

The family requested time to mourn their patriarch's passing and celebrate his life in private.

"Announcements will soon be made regarding the details for his wake, and interment," they added.

Politicians, journalists, and netizens alike paid their respects to the Philippine broadcasting icon on social media.

In a statement, Malacañang extended its deepest condolences to the broadcaster's family.

"Manong Joe was an institution in the radio broadcast industry. A multi-awarded journalist, Mr. Taruc became the pillar of DZRH where he held several key positions," a statement said.

"The nation mourns the passing of radio broadcast giant Joe Taruc. He will be missed," it added. —Margaret Claire Layug/ALG, GMA News
