Palace: 2019 elections still a go unless Constitution is amended

The 2019 midterm elections will not be canceled unless the Constitution is amended ahead of the schedule, Malacañang said Wednesday.

Presidential spokesperson Harry Roque in a briefing said that President Rodrigo Duterte only relies on the Constitution on matters like this.

“Again, the President always looks to the Constitution as his guiding document. The Constitution sets the date for the next elections in 2019. So unless the Constitution is amended ahead of the 2019 elections, it will have to push through,” he said.

The statement was made after House Speaker Pantaleon Alvarez hinted the possibility that no election will be held in 2019 if the government successfully transitions into a federal one. — BM, GMA News
