Duterte vows to 'subpoena' Trillanes' mother over PHL Navy transactions

President Rodrigo Duterte on Tuesday vowed to summon the mother of opposition Senator Antonio Trillanes IV in connection with the government’s investigation into her alleged business dealings with the Philippine Navy.

“We will initiate an investigation kagaya mo and I will subpoena your mother sa ayaw mo’t sa hindi. Baka sabihin mong walang power, there is. We also have the contempt power but we have to go to court,” Duterte said in a speech at the general assembly of the League of Municipalities of the Philippines in Manila.

Duterte in September accused Trillanes' mother, Estelita, of having supply transactions with the Philippine Navy when Trillanes and his father were still in the military service.

The senator hit back at Duterte, accusing the chief executive of dragging his 84-year-old mother, who is suffering from advanced Parkinson's disease, into their political squabble.

Trillanes also said no cases were filed against his mother.

Last November, Duterte said a probe was underway with regard to business transactions with government of Trillanes’ mother.

His allegation came after he voided in August last year the amnesty given to Trillanes by former President Benigno Aquino III and pushed for the revival of rebellion and coup d' etat cases against the senator.

Trillanes had asked the courts to invalidate the President's action. The senator is also facing other criminal cases including libel and inciting to sedition. —KBK, GMA News
