Comelec: 686 SD cards need replacements as of Friday, 6 p.m.

More secure digital cards that will supposedly be used in the automated elections on Monday have been found to have been corrupted and need to be replaced, the Commission on Elections said on Friday night.

In a statement, Comelec spokesman Director James Jimenez said the election body was working to replace 686 SD cards after testing some 43,000 as of 6 p.m.

Jimenez said  85,769 main SD cards will be used for the same number of vote counting machines will be used for the elections on May 13.

There are also 85,769 back up SD cards on top of 125 back up SD cards allocated for each of the Comelec’s regional technical hubs.

"When an SD card is reported as corrupted, we respond by preparing replacement cards. The replacement cards are then swapped with the corrupted cards," Jimenez said.

"We do not issue new SD cards unless we receive a corrupted card in return," he added.

Jimenez said this ensured that the Comelec could control the number of SD cards on the field.

The Comelec will later analyze why the cards were corrupted, he said. —Llanesca T. Panti/NB, GMA News
