ICC analyzing complaint filed by Morales, Del Rosario vs. Xi Jinping

The International Criminal Court (ICC) is now analyzing the crimes against humanity complaint filed by former Ombudsman Conchita Carpio Morales and former Foreign Affairs chief Albert Del Rosario against Chinese President Xi Jinping.

Attorney Anne Marie Corominas, Morales' legal counsel, disclosed the information during her interview on CNN.

"The Office is analyzing allegations identified in your communication with the assistance of other related communications and other information available," the ICC prosecutor's response stated.

"The purpose of the analysis is whether to see if the alleged crimes are within the jurisdiction of the court, and that if they do, then that would open a preliminary examination," the prosecutor added.

According to the ICC, analysis on the complaint will be carried out as expeditiously as possible.

In March, Morales and Del Rosario sued Xi and other Chinese officials for allegedly committing crimes against humanity in connection with China's activities to gain control over most of the South China Sea.

They filed the case before the ICC on March 15, two days before the Philippines' exit from the tribunal.

Last week, Morales, who was with her family for a travel, was held by authorities in Hong Kong. Del Rosario then accused the Chinese government of "bullying and harassment" following the incident. —Anna Felicia Bajo/KBK, GMA News
