DENR orders closure of open dumpsite in Siargao
The Department of Environment and Natural Resources (DENR) ordered the closure of the temporary open dumpsite in General Luna, Siargao.
According to a report in GMA News TV's Balitanghali on Wednesday, the DENR already released a cease and desist order earlier this week.
The local government was ordered to have residual containment areas in each barangay where non-biodegradable and non-recyclable trash will be temporarily stored until a sanitary landfill becomes available.
General Luna Mayor Veronico Solloso had said the local government was working on securing a permanent dumpsite in the area.
Aside from improving the waste disposal system, the DENR and the local officials will also track down establishments that violate the 20-meter easement zone and those who do not have an environmental compliance certificate. —Dona Magsino/NB, GMA News
