HRW hits Locsin over remark vs. Iceland reso

The Human Rights Watch (HRW) slammed Foreign Affairs Secretary Teodoro Locsin over a remark he made about the draft resolution filed by Iceland which called on the United Nations Human Rights Council to look into the human rights situation in the Philippines, including  killings under the Duterte administration's anti-illegal drug campaign.

Carlos Conde, a Philippine researcher for the HRW Asia division, said the international organization was "appalled by the disinformation and lies" allegedly being spread by Locsin against the resolution.

Conde was referring to Locsin's Tweet on Tuesday, where the Foreign Affairs secretary wrote: “If the Iceland resolution wins that means bonuses for everyone who worked for it — from the drug cartels.”

In a statement posted on his Facebook page the following day, Conde scored Locsin for what he said was "an outrageous and malicious statement by the Philippines’ top diplomat."

"It shows the desperation of the Philippine government to frustrate accountability for its atrocious 'drug war'," Conde said.

"Sowing lies and disinformation is part of the government’s aggressive and deceitful campaign to avoid being scrutinized for the human rights violations in the Philippines," he added.

Meanwhile, Locsin, who responded to a tweet that quoted Conde, said: "They (HRW) are always appalled though never at their gross exaggerations."
