Albayalde on the alleged over 20K deaths in the drug war: Show us the names

"Show us the names."

This was the challenge of Philippine National Police (PNP) chief Police General Oscar Albayalde to the international human rights body that claimed that there are more than 20,000 killed in the government's drug campaign.

At a press briefing, Albayalde said he wants to see the the list of fatalities, noting that authorities are very much willing to look into it.

"Can we have probably a list of this 22,000 o 27,000 na pinauulit nilang sinasabi. Show us the list, show us the names and we will gladly investigate all of these," Albayalde said.

The PNP chief also said the Philippines does not need an international body to look into the thousands of drug war deaths as the country's own Commission of Human Rights is capable of investigating the issue.

"Unang-una, of course, we have our own laws, Constitution. Our human rights are perfectly protected by our Constitution and by our laws," Albayalde said.

"We don't need probably anybody or even especially international human rights committee para mag-conduct pa. We have our own Commission on Human Rights also which is perfectly working," he added.

On Thursday, the United Nations Human Rights Council (UNHCR) passed a resolution which seeks probe on the killings amid Duterte's controversial war against illegal drugs.

Foreign Affairs Secretary Teodoro "Teddyboy" Locsin Jr. described the Iceland-led resolution as a "travesty" incited by "false information."

The PNP earlier said it would remain guided by instruction of higher authorities as to dealing with the UNHRC resolution. — RSJ, GMA News
