202 dead due to dengue in 5 regions —NDRRMC

The National Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Council (NDRRMC) on Thursday said dengue death toll in some regions has continued to rise as it now reaches 202.

In its latest situation report, the NDRRMC stated that a total of 38,804 dengue cases have been reported in CALABARZON and in Regions VI, VII, VIII and XII from January 1 to July 13.

According to NDRRMC, CALABARZON has 13,032 dengue cases and 50 deaths, Region VI has 15,813 dengue cases and 90 deaths and Region VII has 9,594 dengue cases and 62 deaths.

Meanwhile, it added that Region VIII has 57 dengue cases while Region XII has 308 dengue cases.

Early this month, the municipalities of Pontevedra and President Roxas in Capiz province as well as Maasin town in Iloilo already declared state of calamity due to the spread of dengue.

The Department of the Interior and Local Government (DILG) has called on local government units to undertake cleanup drives to stop the spread of dengue.

This came days after Department of Health (DOH) chief Francisco Duque III declared a "National Dengue Alert" as cases of dengue continue to increase in the country.

Eduardo Año, the DILG chief, has directed local government officials to coordinate with DOH representatives in identifying breeding areas and learning the necessary steps to take in the safe and effective containment of mosquitoes. —KBK, GMA News
