Registration for new voters starts, to last until Sept. 30

The Commission on Elections (Comelec) on Thursday opened the registration for new voters.

“The registration is open to all citizens of the Philippines for barangay elections and as regular voters,” said the Comelec election and barangay affairs director, Divina Blas-Perez, in a press conference.

According to Perez, the voters’ registration will be open until September 30 this year.

Aspiring voters should be at least 15 years old on or before May 11, 2020, the date of the Sangguniang Kabataan and barangay elections, and lived in their respective barangay for at least six months on or before election day.

Applicants may register at the Office of the Election Officer or local satellite registration sites from Monday to Saturday, 8 a.m. to 5 p.m.

Registrants shall fill out three copies of the application forms and submit them.

Another form for supplementary data is required to be accomplished by aspiring voters under the sectors of youth, senior citizen, women, persons with disabilities, persons deprived of liberty, indigenous people, among others.

This form will address the special assistance needed by these groups during the elections.

Special satellite registration sites are also set for these sectors, according to the Comelec.

Perez said 2,030,630 applicants are expected to register as new voters. —KBK, GMA News
