Albayalde on his impending retirement: I did my best as PNP chief

BAGUIO CITY — Philippine National Police (PNP) chief Police General Oscar Albayalde on Saturday expressed confidence that he will soon retire knowing that he did his best to lead the country's police force.

A testimonial parade was held at the Philippine Military Academy (PMA) for Albayalde, ahead of his retirement on November 8. He belongs to the military school's Sinagtala Class of 1986.

Asked for his legacy, Albayalde said: “Let the people judge me. Hindi ko alam kung ano ang sasabihin ng tao, whatever they will say, I will accept.”

“For myself, I did everything. I gave my best,” Albayalde added.

The PNP chief also urged his successor to continue the projects he has been working on such as the internal cleansing within the PNP.

“Ang pinakaimportante when ikaw ang magiging successor ng isang tao, the keyword there is continuity,” Albayalde said.

“Hindi kami kagaya ng iba na if this is your project, then you will make your own,” Albayalde said.

Walkout

Asked about the significance of this day, Albayalde said September 28 was the day when he and his classmates walked out of their classrooms because of a hazing incident

"We were fighting for our classmate na there was an incident of hazing also before nung panahon namin... we are asking the commandant of cadets to have mercy to those other two na wala naman kinalaman," he said.

"We appealed as a class pero it was denied then we decided to walk out," he added.

Allegations

Meanwhile, the PNP chief was also asked about the timing of allegations that he is involved in illegal drugs, following the resurgence of ninja cops or lawmen recycling seized drugs.

Albayalde said he had no idea about it: “Hindi ko ho talaga ito maintindihan eh. Hindi ko talaga alam why this came out just a few weeks before my retirement.”
