PNP assumes jurisdiction over 2 police training institutes

The Philippine National Police (PNP) assumed jurisdiction over the premier police training institution on Monday, with another police training institute in Laguna set to be transferred to the PNP in early October.

The Philippine National Police Academy (PNPA) was officially transferred from the Philippine Public Safety College to the PNP during rites held at Camp Castañeda in Silang, Cavite.

The PNP is also set to take over the National Police Training Institute (NPTI) in Calamba, Laguna on October 7.

PNP chief Police General Oscar Albayalde said the transfer would enhance police training and hopefully lead to the production of better police officers.

“It’s high time that we take full responsibility for the training of our police officers in order to effectively address current dysfunctions and as well as to instill an advent of new training to become more efficient and disciplined law enforcers of the land,” he said.

The transfer was among the provisions of Republic Act 11279 enacted in April that aimed to foster an efficient and competent police force.

The PNPA is the PNP’s main source of commissioned officers. It offers a four-year cadetship baccalaureate program on Public Safety.

Meanwhile, the NPTI offers basic training for police recruits of the PNP as well as other mandatory training courses.

The creation of the five-year revision plan for the transfer was under development and would be submitted to the Department of Budget and Management for approval. — Julia Mari T. Ornedo/DVM, GMA News
