More than 5,000 teachers march during World Teacher’s Day

To celebrate World's Teachers Day on Saturday, more than 5,000 teachers marched with health workers and government employees on Friday to call for a substantial salary increase.

The teacher are protesting the low pay hike provided under the the General Appropriations Act or the 2020 national budget approved by the House of Representatives. The proposed budget would increase the salary of workers by only P61 per day, according to The Alliance of Concerned Teachers.

Meanwhile, several senators on Friday vowed to prioritize the salary increase and grants to public school teachers, saying they "deserve more than [what] we have managed toi give them."

According to Majority Leader Juan Miguel Zubiri, several bills seeking to upgrade the salary and benefits of teachers are now pending on the Senate. — Joahna Lei Casilao/MDM, GMA News
