Duterte honors Russia’s fallen soldiers

President Rodrigo Duterte on Friday honored Russian soldiers who died in World War II.

Duterte laid a wreath at and bowed before the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier in Moscow. The Philippine national anthem was played during the brief ceremony which was also attended by several Cabinet members.

The Russians, who were part of the defunct Soviet Union, fought Nazi Germany under Adolf Hitler from 1941 to 1945. The conflict has been known as the “Great Patriotic War.”

Duterte was also expected to be given a tour of the Kremlin Palace.

His other scheduled activities on Friday included a business forum aimed at promoting trade and investment opportunities between the Philippines and Russia and an attendance at a Filipino cultural performance.
