Duterte visits wakes of John Gokongwei Jr, Lucio Tan Jr

President Rodrigo Duterte paid his last respects to the late industrialist John Gokongwei Jr. and PAL Holdings Inc. president Lucio "Bong" Tan Jr.

Duterte went to the Heritage Park in Taguig City late Monday evening to visit the wakes of Gokongwei and Tan. He was accompanied by presidential spokesperson Salvador Panelo and Senator Christopher “Bong” Go, his former aide.

Photos released by Go to the media on Tuesday showed Duterte talking to the members of the bereaved families.

Gokongwei died on Saturday at the age of 93. The Palace on Sunday called Gokongwei, founder and chairman emeritus of JG Summit Holdings, Inc., a “visionary and pillar of the Philippine economy.”

"Mr. Gokongwei was an exceptional and ideal Filipino. He exemplifies the traits that should endow us: industrious, disciplined, indefatigable, creative, generous, always hungry for knowledge, grateful and never forgetting his origins, and most of all, a loving person to his family and his country," Panelo said in a statement.

Tan, meanwhile, succumbed to brain herniation on Monday, two days after he collapsed during a basketball game in Mandaluyong City.

Panelo recalled Tan as a “humble person, with a serious mien but with a ready smile to whomsoever he met in social events and official functions.”

“Given his social stature, he never threw his weight around and [was] always ready to lend his hand to anyone who approached him for assistance,” the Palace official said on Monday. —KBK, GMA News
