LIST: Barangays in Batangas, Cavite susceptible to effects of Taal Volcano eruption

Residents of Batangas and Cavite have been warned of the barangays that are susceptible to base surges, volcanic tsunamis, and ballistic projectiles that may occur if Taal Volcano has a magmatic eruption.

The volcano has been in a state of continuous unrest since its phreatic or steam-driven eruption last Sunday, which has led to the evacuation of over 38,000 people in Batangas and Cavite.

The barangays that are susceptible to base surge, are the following:

State volcanologists earlier warned that base surges were the most deadly effect of the Taal Volcano’s previous eruptions.

A base surge is a mixture of gas and smoldering rocks that can move at a speed of up to 60 kilometers per hour, according to the Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (PHIVOLCS).

A magmatic eruption can also lead to a volcanic tsunami that may be anywhere between one and three meters tall.

A volcanic tsunami occurs when ash and rocks spewed by the volcano displace the water in the Taal Lake.

The following barangays are vulnerable to a volcanic tsunami:

The Taal Volcano can also produce ballistic projectiles or the spewing of gigantic rocks.

According to PHIVOLCS, these are the barangays susceptible to a ballistic projectile.
