14 cops linked to illegal drugs to retire amid investigation —Gamboa

Philippine National Police (PNP) chief Police General Archie Francisco Gamboa on Tuesday said that at least 14 out of 357 police personnel linked to illegal drugs have decided to retire while they are being investigated.

In a radio interview, Gamboa said that he offered the cops the option to leave if they are guilty and believe they will be found guilty.

“Sabi ko if you are guilty and sa tingin niyo with the composition of those who will evaluate eh makikita niyo hindi kayo makakalusot, or if you really want peace of mind, then we offer you optional retirement,” Gamboa said.

“As of yesterday, mayroong parang 14 who wanted to avail of this optional retirement, pero I made it clear to them na hindi ibig sabihin na kapag nag optionally retired ka eh hindi ka na namin susundan,” he added.

According to Gamboa, the 357 police personnel under investigation are also included on President Rodrigo Duterte's watch list.

Last September a Senate committee hearing looked into the practice of "ninja cops" who recycle drugs that were seized during police operations. Then-PNP chief Oscar Albayalde was accused of involvement when he was Pampanga police chief  and retired early as a result. — Joviland Rita/BM, GMA News
